How to Rotate Tires the Right Way

For DIY car service, make sure you know how to rotate tires properlyRotating tires is an important part of tire maintenance that will make your tread last longer. With fall on the horizon, now is a great time to rotate your rubbers before the cold weather sets. If you’d prefer to do this yourself, here are some quick tips to make sure you do it the right way.

It’s not hard to jack up your car and take the tires off, but what people get wrong about tire rotating is the rotation pattern. Depending on what kid of tires you have, you’ll use one of two rotation patterns.

First, you need to know what kind of tread you have. Tires with angled grooves that go in one direction are directional tires, while tires without angled groves in a single direction are non-directional. Because directional tires are optimized for one side of the vehicle, you can’t switch left tires to the right side and vice versa. Always switch directional tires back to front.

Non-directional tires are a different case. With these tires, you’ll get the most mileage out of your tire tread by switching the front left tire to the rear right wheel, and the front right tire to the rear left wheel. While these two are changed to the diagonal wheel, the back tires move straight forward. The left rear tire goes to the left front, and the right rear goes to the right front.

If you’re at a bit of a loss or would rather leave it to the experts, have no fear — the service team at Gossett Hyundai South is here to help! Stop into our service department and we’ll make sure that your tires are in the best position to serve the needs of your vehicle.
