Hyundai Ranks Among Top Green Companies in the World

greenHyundai was recently named a top green company by Newsweek thanks to the brand’s emphasis on environmental awareness and eco-friendly designs. The Newsweek Green Rankings have been rating the top corporations in the world in relation to their environmental policies since 2009.

According to Hyundai, the list of top green companies in the world are determined by measuring environmental performance using eight areas as indicators of eco-friendliness. These include:

  • Energy Use (15%)
  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions (15%)
  • Water Consumption (15%)
  • Waste Generation and Recycling (15%)
  • Green Revenue (20%)
  • Sustainability Pay Link (10%)
  • Sustainability Board Committee (5%)
  • Audited Environmental Metrics (5%)

Green revenue represents the environmental and social impact of products during production, consumption, and after use. The sustainability pay link is awarded to companies whose senior executive team has their pay linked with the achievement of environmental goals, while the sustainability board committee score is awarded to companies who have a special committee at the Board of Directors level to oversee green initiatives. Finally, the audited environmental metrics score is given to companies who prove that they accurately measure their green initiatives with a third party.

“This recognition from Newsweek is a testament to our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint globally,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Hyundai Motor America. “Hyundai will continue to place importance on its eco-friendly Blue Drive® lineup in all segments.”

Hyundai was specially recognized for Hyundai Blue Drive, a special division and range of ecological products and technologies which target fuel efficiency. Overall, Hyundai ranked 200 out of the top 500 companies in the world, with a score just over 50%.

3 Great Offbeat Attractions in Tennessee

lakeWant to make a memorable road trip this summer? Whether you just naturally like to travel the road less traveled or you have seen all of the mainstream attractions, check out these offbeat attractions in Tennessee.

Lost Sea – Sweetwater

Nothing makes memories like sailing the crystalline waters of an underground lake. In Sweetwater, you can hike 3/4 of a mile down into a beautiful cavern to find the Lost Sea. The lake covers about four acres, has yet to be fully explored by divers, and features giant fish.

The Secret City – Oak Ridge

The Manhattan Project was set in Oak Ridge back during WWII. Scientists there built the world’s first nuclear weapons. There were a lot of people involved in the project, numbering 70,000 at its peak. Nowadays, Oak Ridge is like a lot of other towns but there are remnants of that historical endeavor everywhere if you just know where to look. Good thing there are guided tours!

The Evil Dead Cabin – Morristown

Are you into zombie flicks and trespassing? If so, the cabin used in the filming of the original Evil Dead is actually still standing. Unfortunately, it’s private property. But maybe you could take it in from a nearby grassy knoll. Bring your binoculars.

These destinations may be unusual, but one thing they are not is boring!

Robocop Realities: The Wearable Robot by Hyundai Evokes Hollywood

These days, technology is evolving so fast that stories of science fiction becoming real-life are almost banal. But the latest tech innovation from Hyundai is a truly astounding invention with a host of potential applications. And it will probably remind you of all sorts of classic films…

Hyundai calls it a wearable robot. It’s a mechanical exoskeleton, designed to be worn by a person to give them strength and mobility.

Granted, the suit is ugly and intimidating in its current form, but its uses are almost endless. For instance, it could enable senior citizens and people with various disabilities. It could also be used in factories. The suit could also be employed as an aid in restoring physical ability to those who have been injured.

Of course, for anyone who has seen Robocop, Iron Man, or The Matrix Revolutions, by far the coolest application for the wearable robot by Hyundai could be for law enforcement or military soldiers.

Hand Positions While Driving: Don’t Use 10 and 2

Hyundai Steering WheelIf you started driving in early 1990s, one of the most common phrases to be heard in driving school was to “put your hands at 10 and 2.” This phrase is still used by many parents to instruct their children when driving; however, few people realize that this concept is actually dangerous and out of date.

According to Popular Mechanics, keeping your hands at ten and two used to be the best place to put them to maintain optimum control of the wheel. However, this was only before airbags hit the commercial market. Now, virtually every car you buy will have an airbag packed behind the wheel. If it explodes, you don’t want your hands at 10 and 2. In fact, this can even break your wrists.

The recommended place for hand positions while driving is 9 and 3. In lay terms, this means that you should put your hands on opposite side of the wheel. This prevents you from getting hurt in the event of an accident.

Other hand positions to look out for include resting your hand on the hub of the wheel—which doesn’t give you enough grip. You should also avoid wrapping your thumbs around the wheel. Instead, act like you are giving a thumbs up, and then rest your thumbs on the wheel. This is the ideal hand positioning for driving.
